Is it possible to think like a Norwegian and feel like a Hindu? This question sums up the issues explored in this fieldwork study on young Hindus in Oslo. One of the conclusions pointed to is that, even though the persons interviewed are strongly influenced by the Norwegian majority culture’s thought and assumptions regarding religion, they still retain a clear sense of being Hindus. By distinguishing between praxis and conceptualisation as arenas for change, the author introduces a new perspective on diaspora studies in the context of religion. The study is a revised version of Ram Gupta’s thesis in History of Religion, submitted to the University of Oslo in 2002. The Network for Asian Studies, based at the University of Oslo, awarded the study "Best thesis on Asia in Social Sciences and Arts, submitted to a Norwegian University". Ram Gupta is currently working as a Communications Advisor at the University of Oslo.
