Norwegian exhibits several possessive constructions. An NP internal possessor can be linked to the head noun in different ways, and it can occupy a prenominal or postnominal position. This book describes the most common possessive constructions in written and spoken Norwegian, and analyzes the various types. The theoretical framework is the Government and Binding (GB) Theory. GB Theory is a branch of transformational grammar, developed by Noam Chomsky and other linguists from 1980 and onwards. Especially during these last years, studies of Scandinavian languages have contributed a lot to the development of the theory and to a better understanding of the nature of natural languages. The analyses of the possessive constructions presented here, shows both that GB Theory is a useful tool for gaining insights into the structure of Norwegian, and that some modifications of the theory are needed when these constructions are considered.
