The essays collected in Postcolonial Dislocations: Travel, History, and the Ironies of Narrative address the ironies and contradictions inherent in narratives borne out of a postcolonial legacy. Taken together, the essays address the mechanisms behind cultural encounters and collisions, taking into account how these mechanisms relate not only to the still insistent after-effects of large-scale processes of colonisation and migration, but also serve to complicate long-reigning approaches to historical and fictional narrative. While some of the contributions place themselves squarely in the tradition of Commonwealth studies, others explore the complexities of multiculturalism, another outgrowth of colonial ventures and migration, and others yet again take the tools of postcolonial studies into new territories of inquiry - an indication of the rich potential of the postcolonial perspective in a variety of contexts.
